Steps to A healthy,Frugal Roast Turkey Dinner

It has been my experience that shopping on a Tuesdays or Wednesdays saves hundreds of shopping dollars in a year. The major grocery chains usually run specials Saturdays and Sundays to draw you to their store and rid you of your Fridays pay check.
These specials do consists of many products through out the whole store. It is the meat and vegetables left behind after these sales are over that we want to purchase. These leftover piles are in corners of meat counters or stashed in the far corners of the raw vegetable sections of the store.

There is nothing wrong with these meat products except the due date is on the day you are in the store… which means you take it home and cook it that day or freeze it immediately.
The meat will have lovely little 2-3$ off stickers on them to make a faster sale to prevent throwing it out. The vegetables will be bagged up in bunches usually around a dollar a bag because there maybe a black spot on it so it is not perfect and they can’t sell it for full price.
Another great way to save is to use coupons that save you 40cents, 50cent or even a $1.00 dollar off.

You can clip these from your grocery store flyer’s, find them pinned to the shelves with the products you wish to buy or the best way is to download them off the Internet. You can save huge doing this as there are coupons for almost every thing and some products are even free samples coupons to give them a try.
The only product that doesn’t have coupons is fresh vegetables and fresh fruit but like I said look for the bags of slightly damages fruit and vegetables cut the bad spot off and use or freeze the rest.

At Christmas time of the year you can usually purchase a turkey for 99 cents a pound. A turkey for twelve dollars ( 99 cents a pound making it a twelve pound turkey), stuffed with fruit or dressing will feed a family of six people easily. For this price it would be a shame not to have a Christmas dinner.

Suzzycue roasted this turkey from frozen and in five hours had a meal of roasted turkey, dressing, roasted butternut squash,roasted beets with garlic and a drizzle of olive oil ,salt/pepper.

Cost per Plate for Thanksgiving or a Christmas Roast Turkey Feast?

You could say less than $3.00. WOW!

garlic was a gift from my Boss.
I love to take an onion and stick cloves into it with a few apples cut into quarters and stuff into the cavity of my turkey for a different delicious flavor that doesn’t dry the meat out at all. Also it helps to cook the turkey upside down in the roasting pan with the turkey breast on the bottom, this keeps the white meat juicy.
GIFTS: Money is tight for me this year more than last year so with gifts, I had to get a little creative, since I don’t knit. So, I shoveled my neighbors driveway. You can dog or cat sit for someone heading south for a vacation. Offer to do odd jobs of gardening in the spring, and walk your brother’s dog. I also paint houses inside and out and someone always needs some of that done. So don’t spend your hard earned cash on presents, keep that for paying your bills and use your talents for presents to enjoy an old fashioned Christmas.

Cheap Food Shopping

I am a frugal food shopper. The roasted vegetable tips I am showing you today started with purchasing a $.99 cent bag of vegetables. There were eight medium size potatoes, different varieties of red and white,one acorn squash and an elephant garlic. (Elephant garlic is called that because of it’s size.)

Lets get started!

Ingredients For Roasted Vegetables
  • 1 elephant garlic bulb, cut top off
  • 1 acorn squash, cut in half
  • 8 medium potaotes red and white varieties, cut into sticks
  • 2 tbls olive oil
  • 2 tbls Balsmatic Vinegar
  • 1 pinch salt/pepper
  • 1 tbls bas

Balsamic French Fries, Roasted Squash And Roasted Elephant Garlic
Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 30 min
Ready in: 45 min
Yields: Serves four people

Instructions:

Roasted Garlic Roasted Acorn Squash Roasted Balsamic Vinegar Fries

  1. All I did to the garlic was cut the top off and drizzelled olive oil over the top. The cooking time for this garlic will be only ten minutes so don’t forget it in the oven. After the garlic is roasted I squeezed the garlic cloves into a jar of olive oil to save them to add to other dishes. They easily squeeze out after roasting them.
  2. The acorn squash was washed,cut in half, take the seeds out, drizzelled with olive oil and set cut side down on the oven roasting pan. This way it will steam itself until soft and yummy.
  3. The seeds I dry out for planting in my friend’s garden or you can set them along side the acorn squash in the pan with a little salt to roast them also. These acorn seeds make a healthy midnight snack.
  4. The potato fries I cut with a french fry cutter that I have used for years. You have seen them. You place the potato in and slide the handle against the potato pushing it threw the blades to make perfect fries every time. I got mine at a yard sale for a buck. If you don’t have a fry cutter, cut the potaoes lenth-wise into thin wedges. They will cook just as well that way. Then I put them into a bowl and mixed in the balsamic vinegar,olive oil, salt/pepper and basil. I wasn’t thinking I had rosemary that would have tasted, wow, on these fries. Put your oven on 400 degrees and put all fries ,acorn squash, and garlic into the oven at the same time. The garlic will be done in ten minutes, The acorn squash and fries will take about thirty minutes. Enjoy. Cheap food eating doesn’t have to be boring. Thanks a lot for reading. Tips For Cheap Food

  • TIP: The best way to know if your squash is good, is by thumping it with your forefinger. If it does not sound hollow than it is too ripe and no good for cooking.
  • Sweet potatoes need to be hard all over. You are buying cheap because of the time of year not quality of your vegetables.
  • If your garlic is spouting all over the top, chances are it is also too old, but if you cut the sprouts off right away, it would be still good to roast.
  • Make sure when you keep garlic cloves in a jar of olive oil, the oil completely covers the cloves or they will spoil. Then you can use them for dips,mix with butter to make garlic toast and anything else you enjoy garlic in. The roasting of the garlic really bumps up the flavor of the bulb.

We all love takeout pizza 🙂  You can make it yourself at home and have the same take out flavor for half the cost. This pizza was made with a pita. I covered the bottom of the pita with olive oil before I laid it on the oven rack. This will make it crispy and delicious.) Then I put the toppings on. This is a good way to clean out the leftovers in the fridge.

I use any spaghetti sauce that I have in the cupboard, Mozzarella cheese in chunks (I drop around the pizza)spinach, fresh tomato slices, sliced mushrooms, onions . Then sprinkle a little more olive oil on the top. That is the trick to fabulous pizza. Put the rack and pizza in the oven on the third rack and bake for 10 minutes . When the cheese is melted and the bottom has  browned up, take it out, wait to slice it( a few minutes). Then enjoy 🙂

Why Use Herbs Instead of Salt

Fresh herbs can pop your taste buds, so you enjoy your food to it’s fullest, better than adding salt to it. The photo above is fresh Basil,Thyme,a Garlic Spear,and Rosemary. If you have to use dried herbs then rub them together in the palm of your hands to bring out their true aromas before using them. Using herbs is also a better way to flavor your food than salt if you have high blood pressure and need to stay away from salt.
Salt is best used to enhance flavors of food than to sprinkle on for a salt flavor. For example a tablespoon of salt can blend the flavors together in soups and stews.  Salt I also use to bring out the flavor of fruits such as grapefruits and apple slices. Just a sprinkle on the top will make it taste awesome. Give this a try.
Herbs such as Basil pairs well in tomato salads. Rosemary is great on fish and meats.Thyme brings out the flavor of soups and stews with some salt.

How many times have you lost your patience looking for a twist tie to close a bag of chips,popcorn ?  Then have the food spill on the floor, while you are looking. Many times this has happened to me.

The solution is to cut the top off, the bag of food, and use it to close the bag. A simple frugal tip and it works. You’ll never look for a twist tie again 🙂 A friend of mine working with me in a Nursing Home Kitchen showed me this and I use this trick a lot.

I hope all my friends and followers had a very Merry Christmas this year. I certainly did with my family.  We are still snow less in Stratford town but I thought I’d give you a picture so you could remember what it’s like. LOL  Snow really is beautiful and calming, unlike, the holidays which can be very stressful.

I found out that, of the top ten stress reducing foods, Oatmeal is number one. We can all afford oatmeal, I am hoping.  Oatmeal helps get serotonin flowing which is a calm inducing hormone. I now buy steel-cut or old-fashioned oats instead of the instant oatmeal because they are higher in fiber and they take longer to digest, so you stay full longer.

Recipes are really just an outline to follow. You can add other ingredients to this cookie recipe.

For example in this cranberry oatmeal cookie recipe, you can change the cranberries to raisins, if you don’t have cranberries. That kind of thing.

My Sister-in-Law Lill added white chocolate chips instead of brown chocolate ones and said the results were great. Her sister loves white chocolate so this was a delicious New Years Dinner Treat.

You should be open minded, when you use a recipe, is to follow the steps especially in baking. Baking is an exact science. The steps are there, so that you actually take your cookie’s flavor to the next level. And I’m going to show you, what I mean, by this cranberry oatmeal cookie recipe that I used to bake, while working, in a Stratford restaurant.

First of all, in one bowl mix the ingredients: 2 cups of white sugar, 2 cups of brown sugar and 1 pound of butter.

Now you’re going to add three eggs,( crack your egg into a coffee mug, because, if you get a blood spot in your egg, all the dry ingredients will be ruined) but you’re only going to add them one at a time and mix the egg completely into the dry ingredients. This simple trick, that you you can use in all your recipes for cookies, in baking will make your cookies… WOW.

Then in another mixing bowl, because, we never mix the wet ingredients in with the dry ingredients until we get them altogether, is the second WOW trick.

You will mix together: 3 cups of flour, 3 cups a steel oatmeal, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 3 cups a cranberries, 3 cups of chocolate chips, and 3 cups of Almond chips. (walnuts would also work good here.) Now mix together with the top wet ingredients.

Then, if you want big cookies, you roll them into 3 1/2 ounce balls. You set them on a greased cookie sheet or parchment paper at least 3 inches apart , because this gives them room to bake without touching each other. This recipe will give you lots of cookies to pass out to your guests.

You bake them in a rewarmed 350° oven for about 12 minutes. You can check the cookies by sticking a toothpick in them and if there is any cookie on the toothpick just add a couple more minutes.  Be careful not to burn them because they are so good. Don’t forget to cool before eating so they don’t fall apart.

WOW… your friends at your New Year’s Eve party, with these cookies on your hors d’oeuvre table in your home.  After the holidays, you can make these cookies smaller, as a healthy treat for your children to take in their lunchboxes. Reuse Recycle Reinvent

Did You know you can freeze your beats after cooking them, instead of taking the time to pickle them? This is a much quicker way to do it with less fuss.   They are just as good when you add salt-pepper and balsamic vinegar to them after they have thawed out. This is an example of reinventing to save money and time. Also save the juice after you boil your beets, until tender, to make a batch of beet wine. 🙂

The frugal advice most people give you is to recycle, reuse, which is very easily done after these beets have been eaten.

I am writing this post because one of my readers said when they freeze vegetables they are always full of frost in the freezer.

I can reuse the bags again as long as there has been no meat products in these bags. They can be washed, kept in the fridge and used again to freeze any vegetables until they get a punctured hole in the bag. Or don`t reuse them if you cannot get them really clean. I usually run hot boiling water from the tap to rinse them and then dry them over bottles in the fridge door.

They also have to be dry again before reloading them or black mold can form. The best freezer bags I have used are Zip lock Double Seal. You must use freezer bags and not sandwich bags to freeze with. The bags mentioned about do the best job of keeping the frost out of your food and you know they are completely sealed when the seal turns purple:) They will stay good frozen for three months but they never last that long in my house. 🙂

Frugal Spice Tip

How many of you come home at night and just want to get dinner on the table? I’m one of those people and if I can find some way to cut a minute off  here in my preparation that’s right up my alley.

This is such an easy tip to do.  You take your favorite spices, mine are Rosemary, Italian(basil and oregano) , garlic powder (Don’t use fresh garlic it will make the whole shaker go moldy)black with red peppercorns and sea salt. Then add them to your pepper grinder:)

When you want to marinate your meat or add flavor from the table,  grind your pepper shaker and you’ll get all your favorite spices in a second. I even use it on popcorn,YUM.

There’s no mess from opening packages and spilling them, or trying to shake five different spices into a dish. Enjoy my fellow readers and have a great day:)

Coffee Ice Cubes

When I developed heartburn a few years back ,a friend of mine suggested putting ice in my coffee to stop it happening. I thought…  I would give this a try. I was delighted that it really does work and have been drinking cold coffee ever since.

The only problem is, the regular ice cubes dilute the coffee.

Then, I thought what would happen if I saved my old coffee ( a very frugal idea) and froze it.

I would not only save money by not dumping it down the drain but brown cubes look and taste great in a coffee. These coffee cubes would look awesome for Christmas in a Kahlua and milk cocktail.

You can also use this trick with Tea or lemon juice, to put lemon juice ice cube in your iced tea.

This is a fun way to get your children to drink more water. Try making ice cubes out of orange juice,  apple juice and lemon juice to give them a more healthier drink to have.

Now lets get back to the recipe. Attosa had the brilliant idea of saving the potato peels after peeling potatoes and roasting them instead of throwing them in the garbage, like I do. I do not compost because I live in an apartment. (Any ideas to help with this let me know…Thanks 🙂
 I thought, I never wasted anything until I saw this. This is the ultimate frugal idea for saving food dollars.  I won’t throw potato peels out anymore, now that I found this delicious recipe.
 I can hardly wait to peel my potatoes, to put in the roasting pan around my turkey for Sunday dinner.  I will put the potato peels right along side my roasting pan to crisp up for my hors d’oeuvres. We will enjoy these crisps while waiting for the dinner. What a great catering idea, Many Thanks to Attosa for sharing 🙂
