Frugal Camping Tip for Corn

Cooler Corn

Cooler corn is just that. You take your Coleman cooler from the garage and clean it out. Then put into it a dozen corn cobs that have been cleaned. Pour over it two kettles of hot water and close the lid. Then Nothing. Let sit closed for 30 minutes and it is done perfect and it will not cook past perfection. I love this way to cook corn.

We owned a campground on Lake Huron for twenty-one years and I learned all kinds of camping tips from the campers that camped with us. I really miss it a lot.

Have you ever wanted to learn to cook with pie irons on the fire. Give these recipes a try. Happy Camping 🙂

Frugal Grocery Shopping Tip

Why buy five peppers for five dollars when you can buy eighteen for five dollars. Fall is the perfect time of year to stock up on fresh produce then cut them up and freeze them. In the winter these peppers will be even higher than a dollar a piece.
Since, I am not lucky enough to have a garden, I shop on the days that my local grocery store gets their new produce in. In my case it is Food Basics on Mondays and Thursdays.

After they stock the shelves with new produce, they take the older stuff and package it up like you see here. Four peppers for $.99 because there’s a soft spot,or a black spot and then you get a real deal.

You can use these peppers for roasting, stuffing, stuffing that turkey, in salads or just eat them like an apple. They are packed full of vitamin C. Stock up on your produce in the fall, and then freeze it to have in the winter. That’s my tip for today. Bye for now 🙂

Frugal House Cleaning Tips

Do you like this Fairy home, I found this summer at Port Burwell ,Ontario, Canada.

If my home was as small and lovely as this Fairy house is, in the tree, it wouldn’t take me long to clean it. I have a two bedroom ,two bathroom Apartment facing south on the shores of Lake Victoria, in Stratford, ON. Sounds grand …doesn’t it. The truth is, it is also very old ,built in the 1960’s. Older buildings come with drafts, a lot of dust coming from the old plaster ceilings and mold, but I love it. I do my spring cleaning in January because, in the spring when the sun is warm, I get glued to the outside balcony and nothing gets done inside.

Here is a list of frugal household tips that will make your chores easier and your Bank account fuller.

Back in the older days of cleaning houses ,they used ashes from the cooking stove to clean everything. How they thought of cleaning dirt with dirt I will never know. They sprinkled ashes on the floor and then scrubbed it with branches. They used ashes on a rag as a scrubby to do the dishes.

Doing the laundry was a brilliant idea. They couldn’t wash their clothes with grey ashes, the way they were, because the white clothes would be dirtier than when they were washed.

They took ashes and put them in the bottom of a wooden bucket with a small hole in the bottom of it. Then they put weeds on top of the ashes. They poured water on top of it all and took a rock and pushed it all down so there was a clear liquid come out of the ashes. This clear liquid was mixed with pig fat and what we know as lye soap was born. Lye is the short form for alkaline liquid that was squeezed from the ashes. In those days women worked hard as we do today. I think I will stick to using Tide 🙂

How many of you come home at night and just want to get dinner on the table? I’m one of those people and if I can find some way to cut a minute off here in my preparation that’s right up my alley.

This is such an easy tip to do. You take your favorite spices, mine are Rosemary, Italian(basil and oregano) , garlic powder (Don’t use fresh garlic it will make the whole shaker go moldy)black with red peppercorns and sea salt. Then add them to your pepper grinder:)

When you want to marinate your meat or add flavor from the table, grind your pepper shaker and you’ll get all your favorite spices in a second. I even use it on popcorn,YUM.

There’s no mess from opening packages and spilling them, or trying to shake five different spices into a dish. Enjoy my fellow readers and have a great day:)

This brilliant idea and photos, I attribute to @Attosa and her Mom

When I saw this I had to share it with you. It is such a fun, frugal idea that will save space in your spice cupboard. If you want this a bit stronger use real tin pie pans. We all have them and I think I still have my marbles:)
Need to make Lazy Susan: 2 aluminum pie plates and some marbles in between. It could not be easier. The pans will also keep the spices from falling over. Great idea:) Attosa’s Mom
I now have one of these in my cupboard and it works great 🙂

Coffee Ice Cubes

Photos by Suzzycue

When I developed heartburn a few years back ,a friend of mine suggested putting ice in my coffee to stop it happening. I thought… I would give this a try. I was delighted that it really does work and have been drinking cold coffee ever since.

The only problem is, the regular ice cubes dilute the coffee.

Then, I thought what would happen if I saved my old coffee ( a very frugal idea) and froze it.

I would not only save money by not dumping it down the drain but brown cubes look and taste great in a coffee. These coffee cubes would look awesome for Christmas in a Kahlua and milk cocktail.

You can also use this trick with Tea or lemon juice, to put lemon juice ice cube in your iced tea.

This is a fun way to get your children to drink more water. Try making ice cubes out of orange juice, apple juice and lemon juice to give them a more healthier drink to have.

Cheers to my readers and bottoms up:)

Don’t forget to recycle your old CD’s to make sparkly coasters for your drinks. They work great 🙂

Frugal Do It Yourself Bedroom Decorating

By July 12, 2016 Frugal Decorating Ideas

A lot of my decorating in my Apartment is from found objects. I usually pick treasures up while driving around ,doing my chores.

Wow. What amazing results.

Photos by Suzzycue

Someone will put objects on the curb for free that I find or I have tried dumpster diving but I’m getting a bit old for that.

You don’t have to go right in the dumpster, people put the good stuff, beside the dumpster. For some reason they can’t seem to throw it away, if they think somebody can use it. This is a great idea:)

My bedroom you see here is all done in blues. The can of Country Blue paint I bought at a yard sale for 50 cents. I painted only the wall behind the bed. The bedspread… I made from patches of old blue jeans and sewed them onto a navy blue Martha Stewart sheet, I bought from a thrift shop for a dollar.

On the side table, is a lamp I found at the thrift store for $3.00 that I painted ,the shade blue, to match. Yes you can paint the shades instead of trying to find one to match the color of the room. The side table a friend gave to me instead of throwing it away. I painted the doors blue and the tile ,I put on the top ,came from another friends swimming pool, that was left over when they were finished with the pool. A Frugal Lifestyle can be fun when ,you decorate from your imagination, and stamp your personality into your living space. This looks great don’t you think 🙂

The idea some people have, that being Frugal means ,you are cheap is not right. Frugal is a wonderful lifestyle that enhances what you have now and can have in the future. If I can save money on groceries but don’t go without great taste, then, I can take a good trip, later on. Frugal is good management of money… if you ask me:)

A friend gave me this excellent window pane of glass and I immediately saw how to make it better. I painted it blue then sanded off most of the color blue to antique it. I found cobalt blue glass beads at the dollar store and glued them around the front of the frames of the glass. Now this window appears to be stained glass and will make a beautiful decoration on the separation wall of my balcony.

Beside it you will also see a basket that someone threw out that I treasure as a hanging planter container.

Here is another reinvented frame that I upcycled tincans to make.. Check it out here. You can do this:)

My whole apartment is decorated this way. Even though, money can be tight, we can still have beautiful little nooks, built, for our retreats, in our homes.

Have a look at this interesting Pinterest Board, to see how other people are doing this exact way of decorating ,to find some great ideas. Thanks a lot for reading and please share your Frugal decorating ideas with us in the comments below.

This is an easy craft that makes a big impact on your balcony decorating:) Here are some more frugal garden art ideas to try.

Steps to A healthy,Frugal Roast Turkey Dinner

It has been my experience that shopping on a Tuesdays or Wednesdays saves hundreds of shopping dollars in a year. The major grocery chains usually run specials Saturdays and Sundays to draw you to their store and rid you of your Fridays pay check.
These specials do consists of many products through out the whole store. It is the meat and vegetables left behind after these sales are over that we want to purchase. These leftover piles are in corners of meat counters or stashed in the far corners of the raw vegetable sections of the store.

There is nothing wrong with these meat products except the due date is on the day you are in the store… which means you take it home and cook it that day or freeze it immediately.
The meat will have lovely little 2-3$ off stickers on them to make a faster sale to prevent throwing it out. The vegetables will be bagged up in bunches usually around a dollar a bag because there maybe a black spot on it so it is not perfect and they can’t sell it for full price.
Another great way to save is to use coupons that save you 40cents, 50cent or even a $1.00 dollar off.

You can clip these from your grocery store flyer’s, find them pinned to the shelves with the products you wish to buy or the best way is to download them off the Internet. You can save huge doing this as there are coupons for almost every thing and some products are even free samples coupons to give them a try.
The only product that doesn’t have coupons is fresh vegetables and fresh fruit but like I said look for the bags of slightly damages fruit and vegetables cut the bad spot off and use or freeze the rest.

At Christmas time of the year you can usually purchase a turkey for 99 cents a pound. A turkey for twelve dollars ( 99 cents a pound making it a twelve pound turkey), stuffed with fruit or dressing will feed a family of six people easily. For this price it would be a shame not to have a Christmas dinner.

Suzzycue roasted this turkey from frozen and in five hours had a meal of roasted turkey, dressing, roasted butternut squash, roasted beets with garlic and a drizzle of olive oil ,salt/pepper.

Cost per Plate for Thanksgiving or a Christmas Roast Turkey Feast?

You could say less than $3.00. WOW!

Frozen Butterball turkey with dressing -$13.95 divided by six equals $2.35

Butternut squash- $1.00

5 pounds of beets -$1.00

garlic was a gift from my Boss.
I love to take an onion and stick cloves into it with a few apples cut into quarters and stuff into the cavity of my turkey for a different delicious flavor that doesn’t dry the meat out at all. Also it helps to cook the turkey upside down in the roasting pan with the turkey breast on the bottom, this keeps the white meat juicy.
GIFTS: Money is tight for me this year more than last year so with gifts, I had to get a little creative, since I don’t knit. So, I shoveled my neighbors driveway. You can dog or cat sit for someone heading south for a vacation. Offer to do odd jobs of gardening in the spring, and walk your brother’s dog. I also paint houses inside and out and someone always needs some of that done. So don’t spend your hard earned cash on presents, keep that for paying your bills and use your talents for presents to enjoy an old fashioned Christmas.

Have a Good one!!!

I wanted to stop taking this drug and find ways to relieve my heartburn so I could improve my health naturally.

DIY For Your Health
Do you want to stop your heartburn without the use of drugs. Are you tired of the chalk tasting Tums or Rolaids?
This drug did work and Suzzycue was so desperate for relief she stayed on it for three years and also changed her diet. It was not easy as She had to eat something to find out if it hurt or not.
Acid Reflux Disease

There are two types of acid reflux: Supine Acid Reflux… causing symptoms at night.

Upright Acid Reflux… causes symptoms in the day.

HOW TO DEAL WITH THESE ISSUES

Anyone who has this condition as I do knows how painful and frustrating it can be.

So here are some of the things, I practiced to enjoy my day without so many anti-acid medications 🙂

NIGHT TIME

This was a quick fix for me, simply put blocks of, four- inch squares of wood made from two by fours under each leg of the front of your bed. This raises your head up so the acid does not come into your throat by lying down.

DAY TIME

We know food is a big factor with this condition. Stay away from fatty foods, creamy foods, spicy foods, and fried foods. Can we still have some taste to our foods? Can we still have some fun?

These small changes will help

Suzzycue still enjoys her morning coffee, a big no, no with Acid Reflux but if you make it the way you enjoy it… it can be very painful. The trick is to put ice in it. The ice stops the pain, She does not know how but, can enjoy her morning coffee. Now if ice does not work for you, have a hot cup of lemon water. It will wake you up like coffee with no acid hurting at all. The fisherman in Florida on their fishing boats, would cut holes in lemons, and suck the juice out of them to prevent seasickness. Lemons calm the acid with acid… who knew.

Suzzycue likes to eat eggs once in awhile but every time she does… she suffers. The trick to eggs is to remove the yolk, fry up the egg whites and no problem at all. Why? The yolks are where the fat is and fat hurts.

In addition, you will know that onions are a big pain, but we love our fried onions. Food is bland without onions. To enjoy your onions… fry them up in a pan of olive oil until their nice and crispy … then throw them out. Yes, I know, I am crying too but the oil has a great onion flavor you can rub onto meats and use it to shallow fry a steak… Delicious!

If you have heart burn and you have nothing to treat it with, you can drink a cup of hot water. This will ease the pain. Bananas is another heartburn food to ease the pain and includes potassium, which we all need to have. Lemons can also ease the pain of heartburn and calm you stomach. Using acid, to fix acid, really works. Try It.

Hope this helps with your heartburn. Suzzycue also does deep breathing exercises. She takes in oxygen threw her nose in deep breaths breathing from her diaphragm, making sure her stomach goes out on the inhale and in as far as she can on the exhale. This strengthens her diaphragm to help keep her esophagus closed to stop the acid coming up her throat. This exercise does work.

Balsamic French Fries, Roasted Squash And Roasted Elephant Garlic
Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 30 min
Ready in: 45 min
Yields: Serves four people

Instructions:

Roasted Garlic Roasted Acorn Squash Roasted Balsamic Vinegar Fries

 1. All I did to the garlic was cut the top off and drizzelled olive oil over the top. The cooking time for this garlic will be only ten minutes so don’t forget it in the oven. After the garlic is roasted I squeezed the garlic cloves into a jar of olive oil to save them to add to other dishes. They easily squeeze out after roasting them.
 2. The acorn squash was washed, cut in half, take the seeds out, drizzelled with olive oil and set cut side down on the oven roasting pan. This way it will steam itself until soft and yummy.
 3. The seeds I dry out for planting in my friend’s garden or you can set them along side the acorn squash in the pan with a little salt to roast them also. These acorn seeds make a healthy midnight snack.
 4. The potato fries I cut with a french fry cutter that I have used for years. You have seen them. You place the potato in and slide the handle against the potato pushing it threw the blades to make perfect fries every time. I got mine at a yard sale for a buck. If you don’t have a fry cutter, cut the potaoes lenth-wise into thin wedges. They will cook just as well that way. Then I put them into a bowl and mixed in the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt/pepper and basil. I wasn’t thinking I had rosemary that would have tasted, wow, on these fries. Put your oven on 400 degrees and put all fries ,acorn squash, and garlic into the oven at the same time. The garlic will be done in ten minutes, The acorn squash and fries will take about thirty minutes. Enjoy. Cheap food eating doesn’t have to be boring. Thanks a lot for reading. Your comments are always welcome.

Tips For Cheap Food

 • TIP: The best way to know if your squash is good, is by thumping it with your forefinger. If it does not sound hollow than it is too ripe and no good for cooking.
 • Sweet potatoes need to be hard all over. You are buying cheap because of the time of year not quality of your vegetables.
 • If your garlic is spouting all over the top, chances are it is also too old, but if you cut the sprouts off right away, it would be still good to roast.
 • Make sure when you keep garlic cloves in a jar of olive oil, the oil completely covers the cloves or they will spoil. Then you can use them for dips, mix with butter to make garlic toast and anything else you enjoy garlic in. The roasting of the garlic really bumps up the flavor of the bulb.

We all love takeout pizza 🙂 You can make it yourself at home and have the same take out flavor for half the cost. This pizza was made with a pita. I covered the bottom of the pita with olive oil before I laid it on the oven rack. This will make it crispy and delicious.) Then I put the toppings on. This is a good way to clean out the leftovers in the fridge.

I use any spaghetti sauce that I have in the cupboard, Mozzarella cheese in chunks (I drop around the pizza)spinach, fresh tomato slices, sliced mushrooms, onions . Then sprinkle a little more olive oil on the top. That is the trick to fabulous pizza. Put the rack and pizza in the oven on the third rack and bake for 10 minutes . When the cheese is melted and the bottom has browned up, take it out, wait to slice it( a few minutes). Then enjoy 🙂

This pizza is Frugal and a fun way to spice up your pizza night with your kids. You can let them make their own any way they want. If you would like to see my other Frugal recipes they are listed here. Enjoy !

The photo above is the Pontoon Boat that you can take a River Tour on from the Boat House in Stratford Ontario. They also feature paddle boats, canoes and kayak boats you can rent. If it is too hot to paddle a boat… sit on the covered patio and enjoy an soft ice-cream cone for a buck. It doesn’t get better or cheaper than that. Watching a beautiful Avon river view full of swans and ducks situated on the edge of the Queens Parklands of Stratford.

If you then feel energetic there is a three mile walking hike on paths around Lake Victoria ( or Avon River) that I have enjoyed walking. It is a peaceful nature walk that includes river views, swans, ducks and hundred year old willow trees. I love seeing the old knotted trees. Sometimes there is a popcorn wagon down on the river that still pops popcorn in a kettle . The taste is awesome especially with butter YUM 🙂

Stratford is centred around a hundred year old City hall and quaint Victorian buildings of the Uptown Square. There you will find shops of all kinds and world tastes from a variety of Restaurants. 🙂

So if you are thinking you cannot afford a relaxing vacation this year, You might want to take a look around your Hometown and see what is really out there. I bet you will have a wonderful time for very little money.

This dog is singing for attention 🙂

Make cash money in one day when you need it:

We have all been there and lately I have been there all too often. So I decided to make a list of how I could make Money when I was desperate. These are tried and tested tips about making money that work. 🙂

Tip:1 This is an easy one, cut grass depending on the size of the lawn you can make 5$ to 20$ +Cash money.

Tip: 2 In the winter time shovel sidewalks or driveways. I have made 5$ to $20 this way also and have kept some of my neighbors asking to do other odd jobs as well.

Tip:3 There usually are Elderly people in your neighborhoods that need rides to doctors’ appointments or you can do their grocery shopping . This is a great job and when you add light house- keeping you will find yourself asked again and again to come back for $40 and a ten dollar tip. Don’t forget to take out the garbage.

Tip:4 In my neighborhood people’s house numbers were hard to see at night for deliveries. So I made $1 a number to stencil the house number on the curb in front of their houses. They never missed a pizza or received a cold one again. This does need permission to do this. You cannot paint the number than expect to get paid.

Tip: 5 Babysitting jobs today rack in $10-$20 dollars a night or even more. This is a great job to have fun with the kids and get paid.

Tip:6 Pet sitting makes even more money. I know people that have got upwards of $60 a night for cat sitting. People are not allowed poets in Hotel rooms so this is a really good job to make the money in one day.

Tip: 7 Dog walking gets you good money especially if you walk more than one dog at as time. People are too busy these days and will pay a trusted dog walker $20 to entertain their pet when they are at work.

Tip:8 Taking Photographs of people (tourists) that come to events in your+hometown. People love to have their picture taken. Just get their email address and email their picture to them for $10.

Tip:9 Deliver groceries . We have one grocery store that will hand pick groceries for seniors and then delivers them. Ask them to call you if their delivery person doesn’t show up. You will get $5 a delivery and who knows maybe they will like you better and hire you on.

Tip: 10 Give a canoe ride for $16 on your home town river. This is a tricky one make sure you know the water safety rules and have enough safety jackets for each person in the canoe.

If you think about there are hundreds of ways to make money when you need it fast. These are just a few tips that I have tried when my wallet is dusty. Have a good day and thanks a lot for reading. 🙂

Do you wish to build your own Wine bottle cork birdhouse? It is so easy.

Hi… Have you been keeping cool like I have with glasses of wine over ice? This is the hottest summer, breaking records from way back.

I went to my Brother’s Retirement Pig Roast Saturday , it rained buckets of water on us. We all had a great time under the tents. We got soaking wet, when someone reached up and pushed under the tent, to empty the roof of water, so the tent wouldn’t break. We all laughed , the kids played in the mud, making mud pies bringing back my good childhood memories. It was fun to see the kids play in it.

Celebrations like this, are a great way to bring Family and Friends together with good music, good food and the rain only made it more fabulous, bringing everyone together under the tents to celebrate my Brother’s accomplishment of 34 years of teaching 🙂 It was a Blast

So… Now the Summer Parties are over and we have saved those special corks overflowing our kitchen drawers. What do we do with them. Here are a few DIY Cork Craft Projects that I have used my corks to build. If you want to build these projects but don’t have corks … You can buy them on Amazon or at your local wine making store really cheap. The birds will love you for it:)

Frugal Dinners for the Holidays

By August 5, 2016 Frugal saving Money Tips

My Friend Marylou loved to decorate for every season and every Holiday of the year 🙂 Mums were her favorite flowers for the fall and, are, an inexpensive way to bring color into your Thanksgiving celebrations.

Happy Thanksgiving Canada 🙂 Thanksgiving is a celebration of the abundance of the Harvest. Even though there are tough times in Canada’s economy… I would like everyone of us to celebrate with a good Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family this year 🙂

You can have a good Thanksgiving dinner for under twenty dollars. Shopping in the Fall of the year is fun. There are bags of carrots, potatoes, and beets for $2.00 a bag, The utility turkeys are on for .98 cents a pound. (utility turkeys do have some parts missing. There could be a missing wing or leg but flip a coin to see who wins the remaining leg and make fun from it). I personally have cooked many of these turkeys and they taste as good as a butterball any day of the week.

One trick I use when roasting turkeys is to smother olive oil all over the top to get that roasted brown crispy skin. The rule is: ten pounds( a ten dollar turkey) will roast beautifully at 350 degree oven for 2 1/2 hours then shut the oven off and let it sit in the oven for the last 30 minutes. I always put all my veggies in the roasting pan at the same time as the turkey and roast them altogether.

Enjoy Your Thanksgiving Dinner with family and friends. Appreciate all your blessings that you received this year. Thanks for reading and I would love to read your comments or your tips on making your Thanksgiving dinner great. Bye for now 🙂

Why Use Herbs Instead of Salt

By August 3, 2016 quick frugal tips for food

Fresh herbs can pop your taste buds, so you enjoy your food to it’s fullest, better than adding salt to it. The photo above is fresh Basil,Thyme,a Garlic Spear, and Rosemary. If you have to use dried herbs then rub them together in the palm of your hands to bring out their true aromas before using them. Using herbs is also a better way to flavor your food than salt if you have high blood pressure and need to stay away from salt.
Salt is best used to enhance flavors of food than to sprinkle on for a salt flavor. For example a tablespoon of salt can blend the flavors together in soups and stews. Salt I also use to bring out the flavor of fruits such as grapefruits and apple slices. Just a sprinkle on the top will make it taste awesome. Give this a try.
Herbs such as Basil pairs well in tomato salads. Rosemary is great on fish and meats.Thyme brings out the flavor of soups and stews with some salt.
Have a great day and thanks for reading my Frugal tips

This was this year’s longest day of the year shouting… Summer has Started. The sun was still present as the moon arrived, causing this beautiful side effect. I love it and wanted to share. Enjoy:) and share if you wish!

Since this Summer Solstice has come and gone, we have experienced exceptional hot days through July. We had three solid weeks of hot, muggy temperatures in the 90’s and over.

I tried to stay cool by splashing water on my arms and sitting in front of the fan. This did give me some relief. I am trying not to run the air-conditioner because I am unemployed at the moment. It also gives the grid some relief if I don’t run it. I remember one summer in 2006 that the grid crashed and we were without electric for three full days. I was working in a factory cafeteria at the time and we were afraid the meat would go bad in the freezers. Luckily it came back on and most people cooked what was thawed in their freezers and just refroze it again or ate it all 🙂 The Hot- dog wagon on an uptown street corner was doing great. Since, I live in an Apartment and am not allowed a BBQ that is where I ate.

One of the best keep cool tips, I used, when I was in Florida, was to wet one of those blue or red handkerchiefs we wore in the seventies(yes I am an old Hippie and still have mine:) ). Then roll it up and put it in the freezer. After it freezes tie it around your neck. This will melt leaving you much cooler than not wetting it. I also used to wear them dry and when they get wet from you sweating they keep you cool too.

Stay cool and thanks for reading:)
